Work out of a Kitchen folder

A Kitchen is your shelf of loose parts: Ingredients and Recipes that belong to no one CookBook, kept in a folder so you can pull them into any project. Everything but the kitchen sink.

Open one

New Kitchen... or Open Kitchen... on the opening screen. A Kitchen is a .ktn file, and the folder that file sits in is the vault -- everything beside it is in the Kitchen.

What it gives you

The shelf along the bottom of the opening screen lists everything in the folder:

The Kitchen shelf, listing the CookBooks in the folder The Kitchen shelf, listing the CookBooks in the folder

CookBooks first, then loose Recipes and Ingredients. Click a card to open it; use the arrows to page through by kind.

With a Kitchen open you also get:

  • loose Recipes and Ingredients you create are saved into it automatically, instead of asking you where each time
  • the Ingredient Editor can borrow loose Ingredients from it as reference layers

Pull a part into a CookBook

Open the CookBook, unlock editing, and press Import in the toolbar. Pick a .rcp or an .igt from the Kitchen folder.

  • A Recipe joins the book, weighted at the average of the recipes already in it.
  • An Ingredient goes into the Recipe you have selected — a layer belongs to one Recipe, so select it first. With only the book selected, nfty says so rather than guessing.

The file is copied in. Editing the layer in the CookBook does not change the loose .igt it came from, so the same Hat can be a guaranteed item in one project and a chase item in another.

Nothing to keep in sync

Membership is worked out by looking at the folder, not from a list nfty maintains. Drop a .cbk in with your file manager and it appears. Move one out and it is gone. There is no "add to workspace" step and nothing to repair.

When you have none open

The shelf is still there, and still the same height -- it just says so. Opening a Kitchen never reflows the screen around it.
